Mid-Term Break

I believe this poem will stick with me the most because it reminds me of a short story we read by Hemingway. It reminds me of "The Capital of the World" because in the line discussing the baby laughing, it is symbolizing innocence, and the baby's obliviousness to tragedy. In "The Capital of the World", Paco's sisters are oblivious to their brother's death also providing a distinct contrast in the story. These contrasts give the reader a more optimistic view, saying that there is more to life than we have experienced so far, and this tragedy is just part of it. It also teaches the reader that we need to try to be understanding with everyone because you never know who is going through a hard time.

  1. Love Poem

The poem catches the reader off guard after they read the first line of the poem. From the title the expect a sweet mushy gushy, traditional love poem. Instead the speaker criticizes his love with backhanded compliments like, "bulls in china" and "burs in linen". The speaker switches off with criticizing and admiration in the poem especially with the word "dear". The second stanza brings the reader back to their original expectations of a love poem. it shows the loved one is greatly admired and helps others. As we said in class today, it shows her innocence and how she doesn't realize that things could hurt her. Also we see this with her reckless driving and her obliviousness to the danger.
The speaker obviously loves this girl in spite of all her flaws as well as her positives. It moves away from the comedy of her flaws to a more serious view as we expected from the title. If her "hands drop white and empty, all the toys in the world would break" For the speaker, all things that relate to a child-like innocence would be destroyed if she were to die which expresses his love and devotion to his girl.

  2. Why is the poem Ulysses only titled with one man's name, why not something like about life?

In Odysseus, the word "Same" is repeated many times, why is he emphasizing this word?

In Ulysses, why aren't there in any stanzas to break up this long poem?Odysseus

Why did the poet choose to do a contrast between the past and future?

Line 22-23 is the only sentence that ends in an exclamation point, is his point that it is a pity to live without truly living? Is this the main emphasis of the poem?

  3. In Odysseus, lines 11-12, why does Odysseus choose to depart if it didn't make a difference whether he stayed or left?

In Odysseus, lines 14-16, who is this person that is wishing perils and suffering for Odysseus during his sail?

In Ulysses, line 10, the word Hyades is used. It's a cluster in the constellation Taurus. Taurus has Greek origin, but why does Tennyson use the word in his poem? It doesn't seem to tie with the poem's theme.

In Ulysses, lines 45-48, is he saying the joy in his life has left him because many of his friends and loved ones have died?

In Ulysses, lines 69-70, is he saying that no matter how old you get because your will will not waiver?

  4. What is the rhyme scheme and why doesnt it rhyme?
Why did they change the title and the name but these poems are about the same person? Is this in a different language or of the same meaning?
    Which poem was written first?
Did the authors want people to choose between these poems and have a preference? Or treat them one in the same?
